About the Role

The Manager Tailings and Dams MinAus provides governance, technical assurance, and specialist support for BHP’s tailings storage facilities in Australia. The role supports improved performance and greater standardisation to the Assets, in line with industry best practice, advises operations on the safe management of tailings risks across the TSF lifecycle, and supports tailings projects by ensuring the consistent application of internal and external standards from initial design through to safe closure.
This critical leadership role is responsible for:

 

• Executing the aligned assurance plan for tailings across MinAus’ assets.
• Engaging with operations across MinAus to ensure the timely collection of data and information for industry conformance, Sustainability Committee, insurance reporting, and KRI updates.
• Coaching, developing, and leading a high-performing technical team.
• Managing resources effectively to ensure prioritised team tasks are completed on time and to a high standard.
• Identifying and implementing systems that support the capability development of tailings professionals globally.
• Driving continuous improvement in internal standards and guidance documents, and supporting their adoption and implementation.
• Maintaining and strengthening a global tailings working group to connect BHP’s tailings discipline, share knowledge and ideas, and keep the community informed of emerging trends and innovation.
• Providing technical governance across BHP’s major projects through IPRs and EPRs, and overseeing key governance forums and roles such as ITRB, RTFEs, DO/RO, EoR, and AEs.
• Providing technical support to assets as needed to maintain robust tailings management systems.
• Contributing to the search for innovative tailings management solutions through participation in tailings innovation consortia and technology partnerships with peers from other companies, and OEMs.
• Collaborating with other areas within the RCoE and Technical function on special projects, M&A initiatives, due diligence, and related priorities.

About You

Qualifications:
• Civil, Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering Degree.
• Master of Science or Master Engineering Degree in Mining, Civil or related Geoscience (Preferred).
• Professional Accreditation or on pathway to obtain Professional Accreditation

 

Skills:
• Strong knowledge of geotechnical engineering and modelling
• Strong knowledge of geology and hydrogeology including mapping and modelling
• Strong knowledge of Capital, Finance and Risk systems
• Strong knowledge of projects, studies and scheduling discipline
• Strong Facilitation skills, Networking and Engagement skills
• Strong Communication Skills (at all levels of the business)
• Strong understanding of tailings processing and rheology
• Strong understanding of risk management and evaluation related to tailings
• High level subject matter / practice stream expertise – In relation to specific technical field(s)
• High level customer / Relationship management skills
• High level project management skills
• High level understanding of tailings operations
• High level understanding and application of best available industry practices in tailings
• High level understanding of related disciplines (related Geosciences, Civil Engineering, Metallurgy and Processing)
• High level understanding of solution costing and cost benefit analysis
• Understanding of project economic principles and methods

Experience:
• 15+ years of industry experience in tailings engineering, covering operations, technical and projects across various techniques, technologies, commodities, and jurisdictions (desired).
• Experience coordinating and working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
• Demonstrated experience in reducing material risk profiles within the business (Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth).
• Demonstrated ability to think strategically, and to develop and communicate strategic plans
