About BHP

At BHP we support our people to grow, learn, develop their skills and reach their potential. With a global portfolio of operations, we offer a diverse and inclusive environment with extraordinary career opportunities. Our strategy is to focus on creating a safe work environment where our employees feel strongly connected to our values and objectives, and where the capability of our people is key to our success.

Come and be a part of this success.

About the Role

The Geoscience Strategy & Planning team is seeking a geologist to join us as a Strategic Planner, shaping the programs that build the deposit knowledge required for WAIO’s short- and long-term mine plans.

In this role, you will translate business and planning requirements into integrated RC and diamond drilling programs, bringing together technical disciplines and delivery teams to balance knowledge, timing, cost and safe execution.

Reporting to the Superintendent Strategy and Planning, this is an opportunity to influence resource development decisions, build strong connections across Planning, Technical and Environment, and work within an experienced and inclusive team.

Strategic drilling programs rely on the early integration of geological, planning, approvals and execution requirements. You will create this alignment by connecting Perth and site Geoscience teams with Mine Planning, Heritage, Environment, Geotechnical Engineering and delivery stakeholders.

Through these relationships, you will help identify dependencies early, resolve competing requirements and improve the quality and executability of the program.

In this role you will:

  • Design drill programs to improve deposit knowledge and support business decisions.
  • Define program scope, objectives, timing, sequencing and technical requirements.
  • Bring together cross-functional stakeholders to understand input requirements, resolve competing needs and align program designs.
  • Develop optimised programs of work while maintaining safe execution as a core design requirement.
  • Manage multiple planning activities and projects concurrently, adjusting priorities as business direction changes.
  • Use geological, spatial and scheduling information and tools such as Leapfrog Geo, ArcGIS Pro and Primavera P6 Professional to support program planning.
  • Communicate program intent, assumptions, dependencies, constraints and changes to customers and delivery teams.
  • Identify and support improvements to strategic planning, program design and cross-functional ways of working.

About You

This role will suit a geologist who is interested in strategic program planning and enjoys working across teams to deliver business outcomes. You will communicate thoughtfully and inclusively, understand the needs of customers and delivery teams, and be comfortable balancing technical requirements with broader business priorities.

Your experience may include geoscience program design, mine geology, exploration geology, geological modelling or resource estimation, supported by relevant software understanding. You will enjoy working with people and data, look for opportunities to improve how work is planned and delivered, and adapt constructively as priorities change.

With a tertiary qualification in geoscience or equivalent experience, you will ideally bring:

  • A strong commitment to safe work, customer value and operational excellence.
  • A qualification in geology and practical experience planning or executing reverse circulation and diamond drilling programs.
  • The ability to interpret geological information and translate it into clear, sequenced and executable programs of work.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to align people with different technical and business requirements.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities, identify the highest-value work and maintain momentum across concurrent projects.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity and adapting quickly when priorities, assumptions or business direction change.
  • A strategic mindset, with the ability to connect technical decisions to planning requirements and broader business objectives.
  • Confidence working with data, schedules and spatial information to support sound planning decisions.
  • Experience with Leapfrog Geo, ArcGIS Pro, Primavera P6 Professional or comparable geological, spatial and scheduling tools.
