About the Role

 

The purpose of the Maritime sub-function is to bring people and resources together through an optimized maritime supply chain that is world class, measured by the safest and most sustainable coverage. This role will operate in the Maritime Safety & Technical team for a contracted period of 6 months, providing technical expertise on marine safety, ensuring that optimal maritime solutions are delivered to the business, and all maritime operations are conducted in accordance with organizational and industry safety requirements. Specifically, this contract role is accountable for supporting Safety & Technical in protecting the integrity of the BHP supply chain by ensuring that every vessel meets or exceeds BHP’s vessel vetting criteria and regulations. An opportunity to learn about safe maritime operations at one of the world’s leading bulk charterers. 

 

Is accountable for:

 

  • Vessel vetting execution: Conducting technical vetting and pre-fixture risk assessments for vessels nominated to BHP-operated ports, applying BHP's vetting criteria, industry standards and port-specific requirements to vessel acceptance.
  • Third-party vetting interface: Supporting the Safety & Technical team on engagements with industry stakeholders (Vessel Owners, Technical Managers, Port Agents), assessing inspection findings, condition close-outs and dispensation requests through to resolution.
  • Cross-functional advisory: Providing marine technical advice to Chartering, Port Operations and Terminal stakeholders on vessel suitability, vessel/shore compatibility, cargo handling capability, mooring and berthing risk, and compliance with port entry requirements.
  • Incident investigation & learning: Supporting Safety & Technical SMEs on maritime incident investigations, contributing to root cause analysis workshops, and translating findings into corrective actions that strengthen vetting standards and operational controls.
  • Routines & continuous improvement: Preparing data, insights and materials for standard Safety & Technical routines and contributing to process improvement projects that mature BHP's marine assurance and controls framework to reduce incidents and business disruption

 

About You


Must-have

  • Experience onboard commercial vessels or within a marine operations, technical, or assurance function (e.g. RightShip, OCIMF SIRE/CDI, Port State Control or Flag State), with the ability to interpret inspection reports and translate findings into risk-based decisions.
  • Understanding of maritime regulations, industry standards, and safety management systems.

Nice to have:

  • Technical knowledge of marine engine systems, deck machinery, mooring equipment and planned maintenance regimes, sufficient to evaluate vessel material condition and operational reliability.
  • Ability to assess vessel-related risks and communicate findings effectively.
  • Exposure to dry bulk chartering operations and the interface between vetting, chartering and terminal operations.

 

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies, Nautical Science, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field.
  • Maritime industry experience in seagoing, marine assurance, vessel operations, technical management, or vetting-related roles.
  • Experience with RightShip, SIRE, P&I, or equivalent inspection frameworks.
