About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated Superintendent Drill & Blast to join the South Flank Mining Production leadership team. Reporting to the Manager Mining, you will lead the team responsible for safely delivering drilling, blasting and explosives management activities across the South Flank operation.
This role is critical to maintaining safe, reliable mine execution, building sustainable Drill & Blast capability, and enabling productive movement, blasted inventory and downstream performance. Your ability to coach leaders, strengthen operating discipline, and work collaboratively with Production Scheduling, Geoscience, Geotechnical, MEM, Load & Haul and Mine Services will be integral to your success.
Key Responsibilities will include:
- Champion safety, material risk management and critical control verification across all drilling, blasting, explosives and shotfiring activities
- Lead, coach and develop a diverse team of drill & blast supervisors, engineers, shotfirers, operators and contractors to build capability and improve performance
- Partner with Production Scheduling, Geoscience, Geotechnical, MEM, Load & Haul and Mine Services to develop executable plans and ensure disciplined delivery of the weekly, monthly and quarterly mine plan
- Manage explosives forecasting, usage, compliance and inventory controls in line with the mine plan, budget and legislative requirements
- Drive performance in drill metres, patterns blasted on time, blasting quality, fragmentation, blasted stocks, loading rates and cost outcomes to support safe and reliable mine delivery
- Embed the BHP Operating System through strong daily routines, compliance to plan, Field Leadership, problem solving and continuous improvement
- Set clear direction for the team, strengthen stakeholder relationships and role model a customer-focused approach that supports South Flank’s safety, productivity and Ore for Rail outcomes
About You
Your demonstrated experience leading operational teams in a complex open cut mining environment will contribute to your success in this role.
You are a delivery-focused operational leader with strong Drill & Blast knowledge, a practical approach to risk management, and a proven ability to coach others to achieve safe, reliable and repeatable outcomes. You bring sound judgement, strong stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to solve both technical and adaptive problems in a fast-paced production environment.
In addition, we are ideally looking for the following skills and experience:
- Demonstrated experience and/or qualifications in Drill & Blast operations, including drilling execution, blasting processes, explosives management and statutory compliance
- Experience leading supervisors, technical specialists and operational teams, with a genuine commitment to coaching, feedback and capability development
- Strong planning, prioritisation and execution discipline, with the ability to manage competing operational demands safely and effectively
- A performance mindset with demonstrated ability to improve safety, quality, schedule adherence, equipment utilisation, fragmentation and cost outcomes
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across operational, technical and functional teams
Location
You will be based at our South Flank mine site on a fly-in fly-out 5/2/4/3/9/5 roster. South Flank is located on Banjima Country, approximately 100kms north-west of Newman, Western Australia. The outstanding facilities at the FIFO village include a fully equipped gym, swimming pool, netted cricket pitch, tennis and basketball court, beach volleyball court and recreation room including a pool table, darts, table tennis, TV and DVD player. All rooms at the village have their own ensuite bathroom, television, refrigerator and air-conditioning.
